The Republic That Ate Its Own Lungs. The government called it development. The forest called it massacre. Under President Prabowo, the land burned, the skies turned gray, and the people swallowed smoke like a national delicacy. Somewhere in the capital, men in clean white shirts delivered speeches about prosperity while the trees disappeared, one convenient fire at a time. They promised food security, economic growth, and a brighter future. Apparently, the future required fewer forests and more excuses. In the painting, a pale human lies wrapped like a corpse, his belly torn open, crawling with worms and intestines, surrounded by golden flames. Perhaps he is the Republic itself, feasting on everything that keeps it alive. Every tree becomes a transaction, every acre a trophy, every rising plume of smoke another opportunity for someone to declare that everything is under control. When the people cough, the officials offer statistics. When the animals flee, they offer slogans. When the forest burns, they offer another press conference. How generous. And so the feast continues. The government eats the forest, the corporations eat the land, and the people eat whatever remains. Nobody admits to being hungry, yet everyone keeps chewing. One day, there will be nothing left to burn. No trees, no wildlife, no clean air, not even a forest to blame. Perhaps then, at last, the nation will achieve its greatest development milestone: a country that has successfully consumed the very thing keeping it alive. And the men responsible will stand before the ashes, proudly announcing that the smoke is merely the smell of progress.
